It must have been terrible for the soldiers back then as in all wars standing in mucky ditches waiting to see if a bullet had your name on it my father was a lewis gunner with the Gordon Highlanders in the 14/18 war he lost his brother in that war and he never spoke about it except for one time I had a friend who`s sister was married to a soldier who was stationed in Paris and she sent her two tickets for her to go and visit her one for herself and one for me when I asked my parents if I could go my fathers answer was no and his reason was what I saw in France during the 1st war I will never forget I said to him but that was a long time ago dad but I could not talk him round and I almost always could so it must have affected him really bad what he saw but being a soldier like all soldiers he did his duty but as I said he never spoke about it wee owe such a debt of gratitude to all our men who fought for our freedom in both great wars
