It never cease to amaze me how the people managing taxpayer funded organizations, in this case the STM, justify their decision making when it comes to salary hikes. In the midst of a $65 million budget shortfall, and a resultant cut back of services to the public, including a cut in bus service, a cut in cleaning services, reduced staffing at some metro stations, AND a fare hike, Montreals transit authority felt it perfectly fine to give its top executives salary increases averaging over 5%. .The justification for these raises from board chairman Phillippe Schnobb - These rates are not out of the ordinary considering the role and responsibilities the executives have. He then felt it necessary to add, Were not ashamed of those salaries because those people would make the same kind of money if they would be in other companies. Oh, by the way, the STMs annual report for 2013 notes that customer satisfaction for metro users is down 7 per cent, and customer satisfaction for bus users is down 3 per cent. No wonder theyre getting raises.
