It never ceases to amaze me how some people act like slavery in America was 10,000 years ago. I remember about 4 years ago reading in the Chicago Sun-Times obituaries that a 108 yr old black women had passed away at a nursing home I used to work at and it said that HER FATHER WAS A SLAVE! There are people in America alive today whos parents were slaves! In the history of man on this earth, slavery in America was yesterday! Now Im not for blaming white people today for slavery, they didnt own slaves so its not their fault. I do think a huge step in healing race relations in this country is that we need to start naming and shaming those that did own slaves! To have schools, parks, streets, buildings, monuments, etc.. named after these horrible people is a slap in the face to all black people in America. We must start teaching our history with these slaveowners named and their legacies exposed. American history is taught today like slaveowners were honest, honorable, hardworking people who had no choice but to own other people. Thats some BS! I dont care that you wrote the Declaration of Independence, the fact that you owned slaves is the biggest defining signature of your character and who you were as a person.
