It occurs to me, as I watch for the third or fourth time Storm of the Century, to my mind Stephen Kings best horror epic, how good he is at setting up the backdrop to the ordinary aspects of life. None of my other favorite masters of horror-M. R. James, Algernon Blackwood, H. L. Lovecraft, Poe (I feel a list coming on)- can do ordinary people and places convincingly; most dont even try. Their characters are all at least a bit off-kilter, their places nowhere youd care to be. But King has a genius for the everyday setting, usually Maine, populated by ordinary Jacks and Jills suddenly faced with the unexpected. Its what makes him the Dickens of modern American writing. Carry on, Stephen. Oh, heres the film: youtube/watch?v=cfXFYcpyuIU
