It oughta be a movie, but Charles Gonçalves, Charles da Flauta, grew up poor in São Paulo, the son of a guitarist who played seven-string guitar in choro groups. Charles started learning flute at ten. When he was 14, a music producer invited him to make a record after hearing him playing on the street with his father and brothers. The record, of which this is a selection, made him instantly famous and he toured widely in Brazil and overseas. After a few years of fame and wealth, he discovered crack, a widely used street drug in Brazil. He was addicted for several years, his career crashed, he lived on the street. He is off crack now and supports campaigns to help crack heads.
