It probably appears that Ive been unusually opinion-free re: protests, the deaths of Garner and Brown, institutionalized racism and all the rest. Not quite. Havent said anything here because Ive been fortunate enough to have become involved in the most illuminating, productive, and enjoyable email threads with a pair of cops (one current, one former). They dont know each other, and the conversations Im having with them are completely different from each other. Face it: Most discussions we have online are from the outside looking in - we rally on with our opinions involving things we care about a lot, and we read as much as we can to try and get informed, but most of the time were not in direct contact with the topics we have strong opinions about. Its incredibly refreshing to have conversations on the ground, to get perspectives from real-world experience. Learning is happening in both directions. I wish every white person could spend a few days walking in a black persons shoes. And I wish everyone could spend a few days in a cops boots. Wed be having a very different conversation.
