It really annoys me when people do this. They post without being informed: Ive done accounting for 5 not-For-Profit organizations and these numbers dont look completely out of line. It is not cheap to run one of these large organizations. The ridiculous regulations the IRS puts on these organizations in reporting alone is a huge expense. A small non profit pays an easy twenty thousand a year in producing a yearly audit. A large organization pays much more than that. Grant writers are VERY expensive. Grants are very difficult and tedious to write and to present. The grant award ratio is probably 25% of grants written are actually awarded. Overhead is tricky. If non profits tries to save on rent, then they are judged as failures for not having beautiful office space. To get dynamic people to run these programs costs money. Insurance coverage is expensive as are computer networks, accounting software, color printers to print program documentation, ect. Also its not all about research. There is also providing support for people living with ALS, creating awareness of the disease, going against insurance companies for adequate coverage and other things. There is no way 100% of funds donated can actually go to front line research - these things just dont happen for free. The people that work for these organizations need to be paid. And they need benefits like health insurance, vacation, ect. Is there money wasted in non-profits ? Sure, but thats part of the human condition. Lets not be too quick to judge based on something we see on the internet without knowing the facts. I challenge you to actually try to run a non-for profit and THEN you can judge. Otherwise shut up.
