It really is an emotional roller coaster when you rescue an animal. You usually see them at their lowest ebb: tired, hungry, thirsty, injured, abused. You may be the first human who has shown them some kindness, and they sense and respond to that with absolute and innocent trust. You give them some shelter, some food, some medicines, some affection. And you find yourself caring for them in the same way you cared for your children, you become a parent to this sick injured lost creature. And they show their affection and trust by their behaviour towards you: a slobbery lick on your cheek, a leap of joy when you return home, a snoring sleep on your lap. And so a mutual love develops over the course of their recovery: a few days, a few weeks, a few months. Then, when a home is found for them and it is time for them to go, it can suddenly leave a big hole in your heart not helped by small reminders around the house: thats his favourite toy which he was chewing last night; theres still some of her special medicine in the fridge; those are his nose-marks inside the car window. It is difficult to deal with their leaving: coming home then remembering that he wont be waiting for you, that she now lives in a different country. It takes time to adjust your routine and recharge your emotions ready for the next rescue. Because, sadly, there will always be a next.
