It really isnt about class warfare, people! Its not the poor and middle class jealously going after the rich. Its greedy, sociopathic narcissists that are the target of anger. This should make it clear that its not the 99% vs. the 1%. Arthur T. Demoulas himself is well up in the 1%, probably .01% himself. If it were as simple as demonizing the wealthy, the workers would be just as much against him. But that isnt what theyre doing. Not at all. They love Ahthuh T. No. Its about treating people as people. Treating them with dignity, as valued members of the company. Arthur T. Demoulas understands this. Hes not the only CEO who has understood this, and CEOs who understand it tend to be well-regarded by their employees. For decades, Market Basket ran its business this way. The original founders, and their offspring who continued to run the company, became extremely wealthy due to running a sound business well and reciprocating loyalty with loyalty. No one begrudges Arthur T. Demoulas his wealth. If more business leaders ran their businesses as Arthur T. Demoulas did as CEO -- compensating their employees fairly and in general treating them as valued people -- there would be a lot less angst. The supermarket business is not an easy one; its a highly commoditized business, but even so, Market Basket was known as much for low prices and high quality as for employee satisfaction. If Market Basket could be run that way, so could other businesses. The problem is when greedy executives and shareholders want to kill the golden goose. They say well, yeah, were making money, but if we could shave employee pay, make them work harder for less, we could make even more. That might well work temporarily, but not in the long run.
