It seems like there is a war on, the constant deafening crackling , the sudden wheezing whistles and banshee screeches ending in a thousand myriad sparkles lighting up the dusty grey evening sky. Showers of little light droplets as if its raining fire in a melange of colours.... I have missed Diwali the last 3yrs and the way life has been , one really doesnt know what happens tomorrow. But lighting up candles at home with my family downstairs made me recall the washing of the earthen lamps a day or 2 before diwali, sunning them , rolling up the wicks, carrying the ready to light lamps and placing them in their symmetrical positions before the darkness descended. And post lighting, a constant check and replacement of the mustard oil....this was what diwali signified in my childhood....Candles were avoided as they would be picked up by the groups of boys walking around in groups and bursting crackers.... That has changed.... Its mostly pretty designer candles now and china or marble lamps... I would always stuff my ears with cotton, hating the sound of bombs and proudly declare myself a complete cowards coz I never burst a single cracker forget a bomb in my entire life. I shared this hatred with my dog Momo Mangmang Patch, both of us preferring to stay inside in the safe haven of the furthest room possible. Mangmang always with his head under whatever furniture I would laze in , with only his butt sticking out. The spirit seems just d same today as well. My first Diwali in the north has surely left me 2kgs heavier with the amount of chocolates and dry fruits I have consumed over the week. Its been sweets , colourful dresses, beautifully decorated homes all well lit....I miss Ryan, away in Ghy with his dad and I miss ma and deuta, but look forward to what the new year promises in store for us. Wishing all my lovely friends a very happy Diwali. May the year bring only joy, peace and happiness to all of you.
