It seems that two years ago, Facebook manipulated the news feeds of some six or seven hundred thousand users to examine how that would affect their mood. It was part of a scientific study to study the effects of emotional contagion (for example, the spread of fear or negative emotions). The ethics of this are debatable. Admittedly, only a tiny fraction of the total Facebook population was affected, but how would you feel if you were one of those individuals who had been experimented on? Even the researchers admitted that the backlash from the study overwhelmed the scientific merit of the results. Also, this skirts very close to the unethical line where users might be manipulated for corporate or political gain; I hope we all see the potential danger in that.
