It seems to be Scandinavia week. Two friends posted Scandanavian stories recently, one about Gevalia coffee (apparently the G is soft) and one about the young Norwegian chess master (Magnus Carlsen) whos currently winning the World Chess championship. Of course, Garrison Keillor described lutefisk again on Prairie Home Companion. And, in the Monticello concert today we are doing 2 Scandinavian drinking songs. One is Brothers Sing On by Edvard Grieg. The other is Winter Song by Frederick Bullard and Richard Hovey. This was written for a Christmas collection at Dartmouth, where both were graduates, but the text has Scandinavian references. One is puzzling, the ice gnomes are marching from our Norways. Ive been unable to find any reason why Norway is plural. Historically, there seems to have been only one, although it was part of Denmark for a while, and it was occupied by Sweden when the song was written (1898). Of course, from Norway wouldnt fit the rhythm, and from the Norway wouldnt be grammatically correct. Hovey could have written, out of Norway though.
