It seems to me that in recent weeks, the majority of us on this page seem to be suffering from cabin fever and the annual frustrations that come from the closing of fall works. As we begin to gear down and make the transformation to slow short days, cold coffee, ice hanging on to every shred of fabric and facial hair, and a longing to throw our mittens in a burn barrel and just go rope something, a cynical and even aggravated edge comes into our day to day conversations. As we approach the Christmas season it sometimes seems that thanksgiving is too soon forgotten. To all my horseback brothers and sisters out there, try to remember that we are all in this together, providing beef to a country that thinks we arent necessary. But... every day when you walk to your tack room, porch, trailer, garage, shop, etc... you are free. Free to choose your saddle, mount, bridle, what you wear and how you wear it. Cowhands are the last free souls out here not bound in the day to day by anything but our own volition and dedication. Not all of us get to walk outside and feed our critters in the morning. Some of us crawl in a truck, a tractor, a piece of construction equipment, or sit behind a desk to pay the bills that never seem to end, and we dream of being just cowboys once again. Next time you saddle a horse or crawl in a tractor to feed the stock be thankful, because you are living the dream the rest of us are still dreaming. As Christmas comes and goes remember that each day is a gift, and there is no greater gift to me than simply living each day in the life of a cow man.
