It seems to me that the way in which is the term Non-Violence is used today in the Hindu circles is not the way which Hinduism advocated in its Genesis. It is obvious, since classical Hindu India was violent in all possible ways like any other ancient civilizations. There were wars between kings when it comes to politics and in its religious practices there were animal sacrifices, ascetic self-torture, fire walking, swinging from hooks in the flesh of the back, and so forth. The criminal law as well has its violent parts e.g. impaling on stakes and the amputation of limbs and what it more interesting is the fact that such punishments were prescribed punishments for relatively minor offenses. Perhaps at the very heart of it all, the climate in which Hinduism groomed, was full of unendurable heat and unpredictable monsoons which might easily have been the reason why non-violence was advocated later, the sages were looking for an oasis in the desert.
