It still amazes me how we supposed to whisper the word coloured when we talk about ourselves lest we offend someone. To me coloured isnt about race its about culture. We all have culture - and other cultural groups in this country have no issue with theirs ... Its what makes people a community - things we have in common. Yes we borrow and take things from other cultures but we also have our own culture - something we actually dont always think of. Koesisters (the cape coloured way with spices) on a Sunday morning before church, Sunday lunch being roast chicken, potatoes, 2 types of curry, salads and rice with a pudding to be eaten after a Sunday afternoon nap, radio metro or radio metro type music being our Sunday afternoon repertoires. The fact that we all gather at the family house most Sundays and religious holidays. We respect all the religions - somma celebrate all of them too, Labarang is ons almal teenwoordig, Christmas and Diwali. The kids have cousins they spend lots of time with, your kids have pjs, gowns and slippers and bath-time is any time after 4 30 till 6 and if you go anywhere after that its in their pjs, gown and slippers and as they get older they flat out refuse to be seen outside in that flanny pyjamas. Stoutjies is considered shoes. Great respect is reserved for any older person - u will always call ppl aunty and uncle - never by their name as that usually warrants a kop klap of note. Discipline is mostly handed out by mothers and should you realllllly step out of line then Daddy discipline is called upon. As jou Pa nou by die huis kom dan brand jou bas van ooraf It is your mother and grandmother and aunts God given right to embarass you in the street in front of all your friends should you ass step out of line. The entire neighbourhoods parents have full permission to pull you straight if you catch on crap in the street. Yes thats how we were brought up, thats how most of us still are and its called culture ... Never allow anyone to convince you that coloureds have no culture because we are originally of mixed descent. Its what makes us as a community so much fun, diverse and yes colourful
