It strikes me that even the Grauniad, in all its efforts to promote immigration, feel the need to resort to the stereotype that everything east of Berlin consists in a hard and bitter life. Krakow is actually an incredibly beautiful, well-organised and entirely European-feeling city, graced with warm weather and gorgeous southern European architecture, ruined for me only by uncivilised British tourists, stumbling through its gutters, making us all look like cavemen. Sure, Poland can be a bit conservative, and it has to work on issues like feminism and homophobia, but that our liberal press seems to paint the experience as harder than living in London, with its poverty-stricken outer zones, regular reports of foodbanks and crippling inability to provide living wages to vast swathes of its inhabitants, is frankly absurd. Most young people emigrate to England these days for our fun, liberal lifestyle and pop culture, not to increase their prospects of working in Starbucks.
