It sure was nice to get away from dads rehab for a few hours last night with a good friend from high school...he had been keeping it a surprise for 3 weeks what we were doing and for all my guesses I wasnt even close, lol.. I was so excited when I found out it was jazz legend Brantford Marsalas live with the Kennedy center jazz orchestra at the woodruff arts center downtown. The place was sold out & he didnt disappoint!! Played everything from Duke Ellington to a few of the songs from my favorite movie the notebook, even philoneous monk. I couldnt decide if it felt like I was on bourbon street in new Orleans ( they even had one of the new Orleans street parade leaders there playing his washboard and dancing cajon style) or in 1940s Harlem at the old cotton club. Brantford can play a horn and the pianist & saxophone section was truly amazing!!! Great kick off to black arts festival, I could have listened to them play all night long. Love me some old school,Big band new Orleans jazz!!!!!
