It took me a little over a year to build up the courage to do the Big Chop. When you have spent your entire life seeing yourself with hair the thought of having no hair can be a bit frightening. Leading up to my hair cut I would spend at least one hour in my mirror everyday. I would pull my hair back and pin it up, to create a bald look. I would make sure my face was COMPLETELY washed, then I would stare at myself. The thoughts in my head went something like this: My lips are big, but I like them. Women pay money to have lips like mine. I like my eyes. I like my nose. It fits my face perfectly. Now my bone structure, I love it. The point of this exercise was to condition myself to appreciate my natural beauty. When you chop all of your hair off your face has nothing to hide behind. I personally was tired of setting what I thought was a bad example for younger girls. My talk show has opened the lines of communication for so many people. I still communicate with a lot of female college and high school students that I met via my talk show. I also have 2 nieces that I adore and a host of female cousins. These young women look up to me. I understand that kids follow your EXAMPLE. They do what you do, not say. One thing that helped and hurt me were my sponsors. For 3 years Tips and Tea was sponsored by a hair company. Along with the monetary benefit came the contractual obligation to wear the hair the company provided me with. Every month like clock work they got the hair to my stylist. So, before I done the big chop I made the decision to not sign another contract with my biggest financial supporter. I had a few to advise me to make the smart business decision but I had to explain to them that this was a personal decision. My personal life and choices outweigh any business venture any day. Luckily for me I had friends who had already done the big chop and were Loving their natural hair. They pointed me in the direction of natural hair care blogs and YouTube channels. They gave me instructions on how they achieved certain hair styles. They encouraged me and ultimately gave me the support I needed to go through with my transition. Thank you Nikki Watson and Islanna McNeally. You two ladies were my angels. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. I took the attached picture 3 days after my big chop. Natural Ladies: We would all love to hear your natural hair story and see your pics! Big chop pics as well as journey pics!
