It took me a while, but I finally saw THE HOMESMAN, a new Western starring Hillary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones, who also directed. Very impressed by the look and the theme. Three women go in insane because of the hardships of the prairie. Hillary and Tommy Lee take them back to civilization. My Western-watching group has been discussing this on-line. Kirk Ellis sees this as the dark reverse of the classic WESTWARD THE WOMEN (which is on our 20 significant westerns list up to THE WILD BUNCH in 1969--I posted the list here several times, but I can do it again if anyone is curious). Robert Nott agrees with me that this harkens back to the silent film THE WIND, in which Lillian Gish goes insane on the windswept prairie. THE HOMESMAN isnt perfect, but its still one of the most significant westerns in many years.
