It truly breaks my heart to hear how teachers speak to kids. This morning I turned up at my daughters school (she is in Year 2) and I stood quietly outside her classroom not wanting to disturb the teacher while he was talking to the kids.....his back was facing the door so he could not see me....he was a relief teacher.....he had all the kids doing a worksheet.....all kids dead quiet......some little ones on the floor.... a little boy quietly asks for help, clearly not getting the task.....AND the teacher yelled at him repeatedly, I said the answer is Alison. THe boy just looked at the teacher confused. THe teacher then yelled at him again....I said tick the box that says Alison. And THAT my friends is an example of how NOT to ignite a desire to learn. How NOT to instil in children a willingness to take a risk, give something a go, how NOT to allow children to have a voice and have the confidence to speak up if they do genuinely need help, how to RESPECT others........each and every day I hear a teacher speaking in this way. I know teachers are under soooo much pressure. The thing is, we say to children, that when they are aggressive verbally or physically is not a way to behave regardless of how they are feeling. So why is it that these teachers are abusing their position of power??? Regardless of the pressure they are under (which I totally understand) I think it is time they either leave the profession OR reflect deeply on what is truly bothering them and ask for help. Children learn what they see. Bullying teachers do not have a place in teaching our children.
