It usually doesnt turn out well when my friend William Davison tries to write about Ethiopias history, economy and politics all in one piece. And this one is particularly curious because of his attempt to pass off the governments latest PR about the infamous Addis Ababa Master Plan as harmless. And I note that he quotes the governments old figure on the number of causalities during #OromoProtests. He makes no mention of the ongoing arrests. To his credit, William quotes a prominent opposition figure to offer a balance but makes no effort to challenge the government narrative. This is even more interesting because last week William wrote about the rise of Oromo nationalism with a warning about potential armed resistance as opposed to say writing about the protests when it happened. Part of me feels these two pieces were written at different times or William is really confused about all of this. Oh, well.
