It was 1969- I was in business. I had help to assemble, wax and eventually I was the operator -of "the Giant Slide" It was Surfside Pier then. And when my older cousins visited my family that August, they came up on the "boards" and met me after a long day of managing the young experimental group of kids-I was taking the canvas envelop with money home and locking up the pier, which at that time consisted of just this one ride. I was just a kid myself in high school and I was entrusted running a small business. Later I would watch as this pier grew and grew and I would take my son and his cousins on the boards. The slide still there and so much more. As I think back on this August day, I think of how hard it was to get that slide to ride in that moist, humid summer. And how we experimented with silicone, sail cloth and burlap to match the humidity. It was the science of sliding and the business of summer fun. These were simpler times and this was the summer of the Giant Slide.
