It was 1988. Brian Wilson had been sacked from the Beach Boys (by his brothers and cousin) six years earlier for being a drugged-out mess. He had spent a year in bed. He introduced himself to his own daughters – they were so upset, it was the spark he needed. So he went into the recording studio, and not only sang this lead vocal, but laid down backing vocal tracks each one-eighth of an octave higher. When he was finished he had the Beach Boys sound – and he said, Who needs the f***ing Beach Boys. A genius.
