It was 1996. Buck Jones were a great rock band from Fort Worth that had released an incredible album called Shimmer (produced by David Castell). After being totally blown away by the rough mixes for the record, I called every A&R person in Los Angeles and tried to get them a record deal. We finally set up a showcase out there at a venue called the The Mint. (They were on a bill with five other bands, none of which got sound checks that night.) Most of the talent scouts that had I invited showed up (a small miracle), and all were very excited about seeing the band. A couple of the other groups played, and when it was time for Buck Jones to play, the weirdest thing happened; literally five minutes before they were supposed to go onstage, drummer Cody Lees nose started bleeding profusely. It just wouldnt stop. The clubs sound guy peeked his head backstage and said, Hey, If youre gonna play, I need you to go on now. The band had driven halfway across the country for this one show. Cody wadded up a bar napkin and rammed it in his left nostril. The band walked onstage and started their first song. Ten seconds in, the napkin came flying out of Codys nose, and blood started flying everywhere. I remember Rick Ross from Delicious Vinyl asking me, Is this part of the show? By the end of the third song, Lee and his drums were covered in blood, and every one of the A&R guys had split.
