It was 1998 and I was in SCSC on project in White Cloud, MI, living in the Wethington home, and having a blast. Well, sometime that year prior to SCSC I had written a little song called The Pope Is In His Bubble that I decided was something everyone ought to hear - so I made everyone listen to it. Of all the people that heard it, though, Pastor Bernie Wethington seemed to be the only one to really fall in love with it (if you can really fall in love with a song). He went around that summer singing the chorus more often than I did. Every year after that when I was at conference, at some point Pastor Bernie would sneak up behind me and start singing right in my ear, The pope, the pope, the pope is in his bubble... and from there he would give me a huge hug and wed spend time catching up. I still contend that it is a pretty terrible song, but if it brings to mind such a wonderful memory of such a loving guy, it cant be that bad. So, heres to you Pastor Bernie.
