It was 45 years ago today, August 8, 1969, that the iconic photograph of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road was taken for the cover of their albumAbbey Road. It was the Beatles last album. The photographer, Iain Macmillan, was given around ten minutes to get the ideal photo. He was perched on top of a step ladder in the intersection, snapping away as the Beatles walked back and forth across the crosswalk. A policeman held up traffic for the shoot. The crosswalk is very near EMI Studios, renamed Abbey Road Studios in 1970. It was at EMI Studios that the Beatles recorded virtually all their music, starting in 1962. The photo used on the cover is supposed to symbolize the Beatles walking away from the studio (for the final time). The address for the recording studio is 3 Abbey Road, St. Johns Wood, City of Westminster, London, England. The crosswalk itself is just outside the studios gates where Abbey Road ends at the junction of Grove End Road and Garden Road. I read that Beatle fans snapping themselves at this crosswalk may have made this scene one of the most photographed in the world
