It was Catholic Bishop Pompallier who asked William Hobson to - TopicsExpress

It was Catholic Bishop Pompallier who asked William Hobson to guarantee religious freedom before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. Although this was not written into the final document, William Hobson agreed that all religions should be protected alike, therefore setting a tone for the new colony. Monsignor Pompallier, Fr Servant and a lay brother had arrived in the Bay of Islands on the 10th January 1838 to a scathing reception of whipped up anti-Catholicism and on the 22nd of January at Hokianga, twenty Maori turned up to destroy religious vessels and hurl the Bishop and his priest into the river. Since they had no knowledge of the language, they were helpless until a couple of passing European Catholics who spoke Maori dissuaded the natives. People in the colony were scandalised by this inhuman treatment and it actually served up the opposite of what the Protestant clerics had hoped for.
