It was Lauras birthday yesterday and I forgot to post an excerpt. Heres an extra long one from #Coven to make up for it. Sorry its late, Laura! “I don’t know what to do.” She fought down the tears as they walked around the edge of the ward in the morning sunlight. She’d explained the conversation she’d had with Ben that morning and Oceana put an arm around her shoulders, one watchful eye on Skye who was running around them picking wildflowers. “There’s nothing you can do.” A sad smile took the sting out of the truth. “He will feel angry and hurt until such time as someone comes into his life that intrigues him enough to divert his course.” They paused on a slight hillock that gave an incredible view out across the moors. “I was in a similar situation. One of the members of my house has been in love with me since the day we met and he had to watch my first husband break me and my second husband teach me how to love again.” Her face softened at mention of Will but it was so full of sadness still. “Without explaining all the family dynamics behind it, I bore him a child with my husband’s blessing. It almost destroyed the balance we’d been trying so hard to maintain.” She shook her head, as though to tumble the unhappy times from her memories. “And then Inaria happened.” “Inaria the seer?” Startled, Sage blinked up at her. “He fell in love with Inaria?” “I don’t think he’s realised it yet, but yes. He’s fascinated with her.” There was a touch of wickedness to her smile this time. “I sent them to France together with Finn, our son. I’m hoping that by the time they come back they’ll have figured it out.” “I don’t know that Ben can love another.” Turning from the view, Sage looked back at the school. “He was born to love me.” “As Xav was born to love me.” Oceana was still watching Skye. “Vampire predilections are difficult to explain but there’s a reason I ended up coming to rule them that’s bigger than my magic and bigger than any prophecy. The sheer nature of all that I am means that they are all born to love me. Even the ones that don’t like me and don’t agree with my policies find me devastatingly attractive.” “I don’t know if that’s a blessing or a curse.” Fascinated by the subject, Sage wanted to ask so many questions, but Oceana’s voice seemed a little distant. “It’s definitely a curse.” She rubbed her arms as though warding off a chill. “All I wanted was a quiet life. I was good at my job.” Her next words echoed like a death knell. “I have lost so much.” “How do you bear it?” Sage felt a desperation like nothing she had ever known before. If this calm, collected woman was seething inside with sorrow, how would Sage ever deal with it? “You ask for help.” The lines of Oceana’s face softened again. “You surround yourself with people that love you and keep taking one day at a time, counting the small blessings. Eventually it stops crushing you.” “I’m glad you’re here.” Compelled by sudden instinct, Sage took Oceana’s hand. “Me too.” Oceana squeezed it. “Me too.”
