It was a beautiful day as we drove toward Yankee Stadium that - TopicsExpress

It was a beautiful day as we drove toward Yankee Stadium that Sunday September morning in 2001. We were on our way to a Yankees - Red Sox game, and life could not have been finer. While my friend Colin McBride (along with his son and a friend) and I were enjoying the game, Jane and Maureen McNamara were doing the tour at the Twin Towers, enjoying the sites of Manhattan and the other Burroughs visible from the observation deck, sunny, mild, welcoming - a splendid day in the city. The next morning Maureen went off to work and Colin, Jane and I drove to a beautiful golf course on the Connecticut countryside, in Monroe, less than an hour from lower Manhattan. Jane and I awoke the next morning at home in Dover, and Colin was in lower Manhattan, as it was voting day. My daughter Kate called me from her office in Boston while I was working in my home office to report the first plane crashing into the WTC. While listening to the speculation on the television broadcast (private plane, etc.) I witnessed the 2nd plane live in TV and the ensuing disaster that carried through the rest of the day, September 11, 2001. We tried to call Colin several times that day, knowing he was somewhere between two and six blocks away from the WTC that morning, to no avail. We stopped after hearing requests NOT to call people in the area so the cell towers could handle emergency communications traffic. In the early evening we heard from Maureen that Colin had walked up the west side and into New Jersey and was OK, safe but worn out. He had been at the polling place a scant two blocks away from the WTC when the planes struck. Thankfully, he is still with us. WE CAN NEVER FORGET.
