It was a late autumn night when I made my way to the ruins of the abbey of St. Michel. I was irretrievably engaged-but everything seemed too surreal. The earth and sky seemed to entwine into a single shadow; dark clouds crawled across the moon, which bathed the empty fields with its pallid light. A night bird cried among some trees-and it took on the aspect of a bird of prey, which sought to rend my very soul. It all entwined inside my psyche, and I felt it compel me to my “prey”-but I seemed to be looking at the world through the eyes of an otherworldly being, a being with no fixed point of origin, and I had the feeling of being trapped in time; in some dark and endless limbo. But I must move on. When I came upon the ruins, the land had retreated into sleep, and all was cold and motionless-but I was in the shadow of the abbey, now; on the very edge of their malevolence. It could be clearly seen beneath the moon, which sat above its dark façade-and it stood as a stark reminder of the terrible task so close at hand. It had been destroyed by Vikings long ago, and the land around it was quite barren-but it offered a perfect haven for their ways, until it was discovered-until I was inside it. It was as if I were in some dark necropolis-a dark necropolis of the undead. When I came upon these monsters, they were at the height of their excitement, in a feeding frenzy, if you will-and it was a sight that I won’t soon forget. It was as if the ruins were made of moonlight, and with their fiendish glee a backdrop, it was as if I were immersed inside a stark hallucination-a stark hallucination that was dressed in the darkest of all dreams. But all their senses were engaged by this most foul of feastings-so that made them unaware of me-so unaware that I’d arrived, that I hid myself right in their midst, where I’d await the morning. In about an hour or so the sun would rise-and it was then that I would take them all-as they slept off their brutal orgy. Only one thing troubled me-the Duchess was nowhere to be seen, and I could only pray that she’d come later. But at least I had the others and I would dispatch them with alacrity.
