It was a noteworthy day for Constitution Hall and the 19th annual Bleeding Kansas lecture series with a program on the history and restoration of the state capitol. Statehouse architect Barry Greis and state archivist Matt Veatch were the speakers. These gentlemen were impressive and their presentations excellent. The hall was standing room only and the audience very appreciative of their efforts. Barry and Matt are gifted professionals in their fields, engaging speakers, and model Kansas public servants. Thank you Barry & Matt! Constitution Hall also would like to thank Senator Anthony Hensley for introducing Barry Greis and for program assistance by Kansas Historical Society IT staff Craig Dannenberg and Matt Powell. It was nice to see a number of KHS colleagues in attendance today. They were (and, my apologies if I overlooked anyone, there were a lot a people!) Margaret and Bob Knecht, Teresa Coble, Virginia Wulfkuhle, Patrick Zollner and Nancy Sherbert . Nancy Sherbert is curator of photographs at the KHS and will be presenting at next Sunday’s program at Constitution Hall. She will be joined by authors John Charlton and James Sherow for a panel discussion of photographer Alexander Gardner’s 1867 photographs made in Kansas along the Union Pacific RR, Eastern Division, line. John and Jim co-authored a book recently published by The University of New Mexico Press titled: “Railroad Empire Across the Heartland: Rephotographing Alexander Gardner’s Westward Journey” [Link: unmpress/books.php?ID=20000000005284] Signed copies of their book will be available for purchase at Constitution Hall next Sunday. John was a photographer with the Kansas Geological Survey at KU and Jim is a history professor at KSU. And, a final thank you goes out to our wonderful Lecompton volunteers Vicki Loechner, Charlene Winter, and Iona Spencer for their delicious, homemade cookies and snacks that were enjoyed by all in attendance today! We hope you can join us at 2:00 pm, next Sunday at Constitution Hall in Historic Lecompton for another BK program.
