It was a pleasure to read the paper this morning and see the prospects of economic stimulus in the territory. Not only are we set to welcome a record-breaking number of cruise ship visitors to St. Thomas on Tuesday, our Tourism Departments Film Office has revealed a number of commercial and film shoots in the territory. More things are happening and fast. As the Senates Economic Development, Agriculture and Planning Committee Chair, I am so pleased to work with professionals in government agencies under the jurisdiction of my chairmanship. Kudos go out to Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson Doty and the hardworking staff at the Tourism Department. I also continue to publicly commend WICO Executive Director Joseph Boschulte and V.I. Port Authority Executive Director Carlton Dowe, and their respective staff for the awesome job they are doing to bring visitors to our shores. Their work opens up a myriad of opportunities for existing and prospective businesses for either expanding or starting operations. Remember, these agencies create the captive audience ready to spend. It is up to us to capitalize on this. Because if we do not, then the visits would only amount to a nuisance. But we must continue to discuss ways for our local population to benefit from the 2-million+ visitors to our shores.
