It was a stroke of luck any of us turned up to play this week as all the emails relating to the game and the team were sent under the heading 2nd Feb Match. According to my calendar the 2nd is a Sunday, but not to worry. Turn up we did. After the rotten weather last week, it was a relief to see the sun out in Ripley and as the Hornets were having a mid-day push back the chill in the air was decidedly less than earlier in the day. Unlike the wind. It started to blow and was soon fierce enough to actually move a hockey ball off its resting place. Given the choice we would all probably have preferred to play in full snow suits, but as it wasn’t an option we warmed up and got down to the job in hand. The job in hand was a league match against Belper 3rds. As ever, it was no walk in the park and the 2-2 half time score line had us all more than a little twitchy. We went on to win 7-2 in the end, but as we had been running into the wind in the first half, we obviously got wind assistance in the second which helped no end. Thanks have to go to both sets of supporters who braved the elements on the touch line. Down at refreshments subs were paid, cobs munched, player of the match voted for (well done Jane) and scorers names added to the spreadsheet we all know and love. Sarah had added another 3 to her total. Lynn had smashed in a strike at a penalty corner. Jane had got the other 3. We recalled her goals with affection as we realised a rare occurrence had taken place. One of her shots had come from a pass in the D from Sarah. There’s one for the record books. To be honest everyone seemed in fine spirits, and even Rach using her phone to resemble a bouncing bomb couldn’t dampen the mood. Notty took the opportunity to take a photo but my guess is Lord Lichfield has little to worry about. It’s not often a photo of an empty salt sachet on a plate wins a Master Photographers Association award. Then again, who would have ever thought Damian Hirst’s Ashtray would end up in a gallery? Soon talk turned to next weeks match which is against Matlock 3rds in Wirksworth. Notty admitted to not knowing where Wirksworth was, but as it was near Matlock she suggested maybe we should camp out. Matlock’s home ground is in actual fact just eleven and a half miles away from Mill Hill School, so I don’t think we need to get Sarah’s caravan rolling just yet guys. VIC
