It was an interesting moment this evening when a very familiar looking young man was bagging my groceries at Kroger. He kept trying to avoid eye contact, but quickly I figured out where I knew him from. A few weeks ago he and a few of his friends had hopped our neighborhood pool fence, and decided to go for a swim with much of our pool furniture. When I asked them to remove the furniture from the pool and to leave since they didnt live in the neighborhood, they had some very ugly things to say to me, and I finally had to call the police to have them removed. The same boys came back 2 days later and again were very ugly and confrontational. This young man had been the mouthiest and most confrontational of the group. So here we were, face to face over a bag of groceries and you could see in his face, that he knew, that I KNEW who he was. I said I remember you. And he lowered his eyes, and timidly said, I remember you......from your parking lot. I asked if he had just started to work at Kroger, and he said yes. Suddenly, my heart was reminded of some of the less than stellar Christ like moments that I have had in my life and the grace that had been given me on more than a few undeserving occasions. So I looked at the cashier, who happened to be the store manager and I said You have a very nice, helpful young man here. He is awesome and you are blessed to have him working with you. As she agreed and gave this new employee praise, I could see the look of shock on his face, soften into a genuine smile. I shook his hand and said Truce? and he smiled and said, Yes.....truce. Always remember to extend the same amount of grace on peoples worst day, as you would like to receive, on your own worst day.
