It was another sad day for Gertrude and I today. After visiting flood victims in Mangochi last Friday, reality of the ravaging floods that have hit the country fell on us once again on Wednesday when we visited fellow citizens hit by the disaster in the Lower Shire districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje. The situation in the camps is terrible but the most important thing is that they have been brought to safety. It was very sad to see women, children and men put together in one tent. I was however comforted by the calmness of the people in these camps. They are living in harmony and their faces tell a story of bravery and hope, they are survivors. My assurance to all Malawians is that my government will continue providing assistance to the displaced households with support from all well-wishers from across the globe. I hope that humanitarian and technical aid that is being provided by all the well-wishers will help mitigate consequences of the flood, restore damaged territories and prevent more victims. In this hour of grief for the whole country, I wish the victims families much strength and fortitude. My sincere gratitude goes to all those including the Malawi Defense Force soldiers and other local volunteers who doing an amazing job, working day night, even risking their own lives to ensure that more people are rescued and brought to safety as well as taking care of the people in the camps. May God reward them with more strength to continue serving fellow citizens and the country.
