It was another scorcher today at 90 degrees! Keep pets safe from heat. They do not cool off like humans do. Dogs pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes away heat from their body. But when the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves off and their temperature rises very quickly. If your pet is outside, doghouses dont protect them from heat, its worse. Cool them off inside and out. Some people use a baby pool to let them drench in. Have water available at all times. Ceiling fans do not cool them off as they do us. And, as we have seen on the news many times, do not leave your baby in the car and this applies to your pets as well. My cat, Kitty was outside for several hours today but I was ready and prepared a damp towel for her. As soon as she came in, she headed straight for it and I could see her panting. Another good idea is to put ice in their water dish. I did this with the chickens too. Having lost one chicken probably due to natural causes (thanks, Val), I didnt want to take any chances.
