It was great to have the High Performance Manager for the Ballarat - TopicsExpress

It was great to have the High Performance Manager for the Ballarat Red Devils (soccer) - Liam Towell visit the RAD Centre yesterday! Liam recently finished his Honours research with his study investigating the relationship between individual player training load, recovery and injury. As change of direction speed is an important component for many athletes we decided to play around with a few very basic drills. Activities involving deceleration & changing direction around a course defined by obstacles is “change-of- direction speed” (CODS) These drills are - Pre-planned and a Closed skill. With all of the drills highlighted in this video the emphasis was on driving the inside leg up and towards the intended change of direction combined with an exaggerated hold on the outside leg to promote proper glute activation and control preventing the hip from dropping. Very basic drill but just focussing on getting the motor patterning correct, teaching the brain to place the feet in the correct spot keeping relatively close to the centre of mass reducing excessive force on the braking load. Getting technique correct will help to prevent future injuries. Strength lays the foundation for all movements. It is essential in being able to get an effective and quick change of direction speed. Being able to apply force to the ground correctly is crucial! A Strong athlete will be able to be accelerating and then come into the change of direction, be able to brake and decelerate before planting the foot applying force to the ground and driving off that foot causing a change of direction. These very basic drills will lay the foundation to then progress in to agility drills. Agility - A rapid whole-body movement with change of velocity or direction in response to a STIMULUS” (Sheppard & Young, 2006) There will be a video uploaded in the new year with some examples of agility drills. #RADcentre #GoPro #CODS #strength #speed
