It was illustrated to me once again yesterday how important - TopicsExpress

It was illustrated to me once again yesterday how important moments of solitude are. Somewhere, some way I happened to stumble across an image of a lamb in a field, and I was still staring at it several minutes later. What is it that is so simple and yet so powerful about this image? How is it that it is so disarming, causing the most powerful of men and the greatest of sinners to crumple to their knees? It is because that lost one is, of course, ourselves. The one who is lost and knows that he is lost. Certainly there is no hope. Surely he is too far gone. Surely he is unworthy and helpless, and the dark night approaches. And this lost lamb cries one last desperate wail for help. And his cries are heard. And while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran towards him. (A long pause, and my eyes well up) And here we see demonstrated the most beautiful and unique of gifts to Humanity: Mercy. Mercy which takes the brokenness and hurt of another and takes it upon himself, a lamb without blemish, so as to free that other out of love and love alone, to go and sin no more. Mercy freely given to a suffering child with nowhere left to turn. (Tears rolling down my cheeks at this point) Lord, in all my ways may I always be merciful above all else. May I show kindness and understanding as one only can who was once lost, and now is found. And may we all love one another as you first loved us. Most merciful God. Pie Jesu. Amen.
