It was in March 17th 1994 at around 9.00pm when my boss took me to Jibowu Lagos park of The Young Shall Grow (transport company) to board a luxury bus(night bus) to Enugu. The roads were save in those days and I savoured the serenity of the skyline of the country side as the bus travelled down to its destination. My assignment was to handle some cases in our Enugu Law Office in some High Courts around the East. I was to ask of my way to No.... Mgbemena and be a guest to Itchie Francis Umeh, the Ezechiyelude of Neni, the father of my boss and the landlord of our Enugu Law Firm. I got to Enugu early in the morning and a colleague, Barr Amucheazi picked me up from the park to our place behind Ogbete Market. My host and the wife, the mother of my boss, treated me like king. The woman arranged the bathroom for me to shower, gave me a new Closeup took paste and a new unused tooth brush. Thereafter some hot breakfast of vegetable and yam. Now for the period of my stay I was given the kind of respect nobody had ever accorded me. The Itchie would invite me around noon to his modest sitting room and offered me some greenish species of garden eggs with some paste made from peanuts. I made enquiry and confirmed that such offer of garden eggs and peanuts paste is equivalent to the Yoruba offer of gin and kolanuts to a respected guest. I was 27 then. 19 years after the good memories linger. This is a way of saying thank you to Itchie Francis Umeh and to wish him long life in good health. He must be close to a hundred now but still looking good!
