It was narrated from Ibn Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If my Companions are mentioned, then keep quiet; if the stars are mentioned, then keep quiet; and if the divine decree is mentioned, then keep quiet.” - Narrated by al-Tabarani and classed as saheeh by shaykh Albani in as silisilah as saheehah no, 34. The hadeeth indicates that it is not permissible for anyone to speak ill of the sahabas. Imam Tabarani has narrated this hadeeth in al-Mujam al-kabir vol 2:93 10:244; Ibn Adi in al-Kamil fi al-duafa (6:2172) from Umar, Ibn Masud, and Thawban; and Ibn Abi Usama from Ibn Masud. al-Iraqi in his Takhrij ahadith al-Ihya entitled al-Mughni an haml al-asfar [Book of knowledge] said: Tabarani narrated it from Ibn Masud with a fair (hasan) chain. Haythami said in Majma al-zawaid (7:202, 223 nos, o11395-6, 11515): From Thawban: Tabarani narrated it with a chain contaning Yazid ibn Rabia who is weak; from Abd Allah ibn Masud: Tabarani narrated it and its chain contains Mushar ibn Abd al-Malik, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared trustworthy but there is disagreement about him, while the rest of the narrators are the men of sound hadith. Imam Suyutis graded it as hasan in al-Jami al-saghir, no 615.
