It was news thousands in central Texas who grew to care for Colton Turner wanted to hear. “The homicide case of Colton Turner has resulted in additional charges” announced Austin Police Homicide Commander Mark Spangler. That charge, injury to a child, left many wondering, why not murder? Spangler was asked that question. He replied “injury to a child charge is the most appropriate to be filed.” According to the Texas penal code, a person commits murder when they intentionally or knowingly cause the death of an individual; or intends to cause serious bodily injury and commits an act clearly dangerous to human life that causes the death of an individual. Police say they do not have any evidence regarding Work’s intent. Spangler says they do have a witness who saw work “hitting and slapping a child with her hands while seated in the passenger seat.” The witness also told police “she picked him up and forcefully shook him, and then slammed his head against the interior passenger door of the vehicle.” The account is horrific, but that witness account is enough evidence to support the charge of injury to a child. It is a first degree felony just like murder, which means Work and her boyfriend Michael Turner could spend the rest of their lives in prison if convicted. Police did not rule out a murder charge. Spangler said if they discover evidence to support that charge, it will be presented to a grand jury. Meagan Work and Michael Turner will be back in court October 30th.
