It was no secret that I, as a New Haven Police Officer in the early 60s, had a love affair with the Westville residents. Some of whom are still my friends today, thanks to Facebook. I have a scrapbook full of cherished memories, Some from Westville and others from other parts of New Haven. The most cherished is a love letter from an 8 year old Westville girl dated November 3, 1963. Because this letter is very personal and confidential, I will not reveal the contents or the name of the author. Except for one thing. On the front page of this letter is a drawing of a large heart with the written words inside of the heart. LOVE IS YOU BOB. True friendship is a blessed thing. To have the love and friendship between a little girl and a big 225 lb. Policeman last for more than 50 years is not only a blessed thing, but a very rare and wonderful thing. If I sometime have that rare day where things are a little bit off, I open my scrapbook and remove this letter from the large pink envelope and read it. It always puts a smile on my face.
