It was noted that Klemperer took slower tempos in his later years. His use of tempo - or tempi - if I may, seems masterful in this recording - and though he was in his 70s, I do not know if that was necessarily considered his later years. My observation of his performance of the 1st movement, Selig sind, led me to pull out the metronome and confirm what I thought I heard. Maestro Klemperer does not stick to one tempo throughout the entire movement. Although Brahms does not indicate tempo adjustments, Klemperer fluctuates between 66 and 84, depending on the section. Although his baseline seems to be 72. He even drops to 60 at one point. This awareness becomes very valuable for me, as I had been preparing the accompaniment with no tempo fluctuation at all. It seems I should allow the Human Requiem to breathe a bit more.
