It was on January 26, 1831 that Mary Mapes Dodge was born Mary Mapes in New York City. She moved to Newark as a child, and after her husband, William Dodge, was found drowned, an apparent suicide, in 1857, supported herself and her children as a writer and editor. Best known for her book Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates, Mapes Dodge served as editor of a number of periodicals, most notably the children’s periodical Saint Nicholas Magazine. She died on August 21, 1905 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside.
