It was on this date 18 years ago, Dec. 2, 1996 that I went back to work after 8 weeks maternity leave and my 2-month old son Brandon went to his new daycare/babysitter, my whole world changed when the sitter called my office about 1:15pm to say that hed vomited & then stopped breathing & started to turn blue so shed called 911, hed gone into congestive heart failure, we found out later that hed been born with multiple congenital heart defects (7 things wrong with his little heart!), the pediatricians at the clinic here in Kaneohe had totally missed it! Dr. Rupert Chang at Kapi`olani Hospital was on duty in the E.R. & after a basic diagnosis of an enlarged heart he said there was a 50/50 chance hed make it through the night, the only thing I could do was to call everyone I could think of and ask them to pray, friends called other friends, called their moms, called church prayer lines, I know by that night there were hundreds of people who prayed for him, I truly believe he is still here today because of the power of prayer! To look at him now & see a big tall boy youd never guess until he takes off his shirt & see the scars, we had 2 emergency surgeries here in Honolulu, then open-heart surgery in San Diego where Dr. Lamberti did a repair on his mitral valve that had never been done on anyone under the age of 15 before and he said if it lasts 2 years it would be medical history, its lasted almost 18 years now! We had to go back to San Diego for 2 more surgeries, I had to take a year off work to care for him, it was a tough time for us, Im so grateful to God, the doctors, nurses & other hospital staff, all the friends & family who have provided support in so many ways, HUGS in Kaimuki (a United Way agency for families with seriously ill children), to get Brandon to where he is now! My life took a path I had not planned, but God know where He wanted me to go! Im grateful for every sunrise I see, and every moment I get to spend on this earth with my son!
