It was on this day in 1948 that Charlie Tully signed for Celtic. Arriving from Belfast Celtic, Tully was known as a fantastic dribbler and passer of the ball and with his skill and flair on show, he quickly became a fans favourite. He was possibly the first football celebrity and it during his time at Celtic it was possible to own Tully ties and even buy a Tully cocktail in bars around Glasgow. During his time at Celtic, he terrorised opposition defenders and on occasion bamboozled referees, most notably against Falkirk in the Scottish Cup in February 1953, when he whipped the ball into the net directly from a corner. However, the referee ordered Tully to re-take the corner and he subsequently repeated the feat! This time the goal stood. Charlie Tully was not only an entertaining footballer, but he was able to inspire his team to victory, most notably against Aberdeen in the St Mungos Cup in 1951 when the Bhoys were 2-0 early in the first-half and went on to win 3-2, with Tully getting on the scoresheet in the process. He also had a starring role in the League Cup final on October 19, 1957, which Celtic beat Rangers 7-1 a game which is immortalised as Hampden in the Sun. In his 319 appearances for Celtic, Charlie Tully scored 43 goals and won two League and Scottish Cups, as well as the league title in 1953/54.
