It was on this day in 1955 that the Houston International Airport terminal building opened for service. Although dedicated on October 30, 1954 with a Gala and public Open House, the building wasnt ready for use until April. Mayor Hofheinz, City Council, the airlines and the public were enraged by the continuing delays. Under construction since 1951, the opening date had slipped and slipped, month by month. Conditions at the existing 1940 Municipal Airport were a mess with both aircraft and automobile parking a persistent problem. Even after opening there were complaints that the runways werent long enough for the coming jet airliners. An extra wing would be added in 1961 and finally an entirely new airport - Intercontinental - would be opened in 1969, that after experiencing two years of its own delays! Text © Michael Bludworth
