It was one day of sacrifice, if you even want to call refraining - TopicsExpress

It was one day of sacrifice, if you even want to call refraining from shopping sacrifice. It was one day to check our pulse of activism, of unity and collectivism, of our willingness to do something other than just accept the status quo. Some of us asked others of us to just give one day to focus on healing, organizing, developing long-term strategies, building momentum, coming together. We wanted one day to show ourselves, forget the world, that restraint was in our will house and we could put ourselves first for once this generation. We, the grandchildren of jazz, children of soul, & innovators of Hip Hop, which defies everything that tries to contain the human spirit, we asked for one day to kick off a campaign for change. Like sheep, we didnt vehemently question or challenge elections that were tainted or the decisions to allow the various murderers of our children and brothers and sisters to be acquitted or allowed to abscond, but we challenged the purpose of the request for today. We challenged a suggested method with our wit and expensive intellect and discouraging gaffes and expressed desire for some... stuff, material stuff. When history tells our story, it need not rewrite it as it usually does to show our disharmony and disunity. It can tell it very accurately and do that just the same. But, we still press on. Black Out Friday sparked a movement within me. And, because I didnt have the idea alone, I know there will be others. I pledge to seek black owned businesses for everything I purchase, to create or invest in others to fill the voids, to avoid spending on unnecessary items whenever possible, to support movements for progress with solutions rather than discourse, and to vote with my dollar like our lives depend on it (because they do), until they are no longer endangered. There is no end date. Will you join me? Javonté Javonté
