It was only two days before Christmas when 22-day-old Betsey Kee Stephens was found unresponsive at a Golden Corral parking lot in Lakeland, Florida. WSPA said Betsey was with her parents, 48-year-old Roy Allen Stephens and 23-year-old Ruby Angeline Stephens, when the pair called 911 to say the infant was not breathing. According to the report, Ruby Stephens told authorities she had checked Betsey’s feet because they were cold, so she covered them with a blanket. That was earlier in the afternoon, not long after they checked into a Comfort Inn after arriving from Indiana, where they live. Just after the hotel stop, reports said the couple and their children went to the Golden Corral to meet other family members. It was there on site when Ruby said she checked the baby’s feet again inside the car seat, and according to the report, that’s when she realized Betsey was not responding. Although first responders arrived on the scene and attempted to save Betsey’s life, she didn’t make it. In a surprising twist, her death was later ruled a homicide – but no arrests have been made. Betsey leaves behind two siblings a 2-year-old sister and a 1-year-old brother, both children were found by authorities inside their car seats. WSPA said both appeared to be in good health. “Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the baby was deceased for at least 3 ½ hours prior to the mother calling 911,” WSPA said. Although the cause of baby Betsey’s death may be known, the manner in which she was killed has not been released.
