It was previously unknown whether compression therapy offered any benefit over anticoagulation alone for lower extremity superficial phlebitis. A small trial demonstrated that adding compression therapy to low molecular weight heparin resulted in faster thrombus regression but did not result in faster symptom improvement or better quality of life. We offer compression stockings to patients undergoing anticoagulation for superficial phlebitis if there are no contraindications, but do not insist on their use if they are not well tolerated.
